Finalizing our topic

Hi guys,
I thought it's high time we decided on the main topic of our project and how to work on it, so here are the questions we noted down 2 weeks ago:

Who will profit more, students or teachers?
What schools are using games for language learning?
How practical is this technique?
Why is it better than the traditional method?
What games are used for this technique?

Do you think these questions are okay or shall we change/omit some and add new perspectives perhaps? Here is Graham Stanley's gaming blog again, which might help us in our work. I also mentioned during our last class that maybe we should each try a game of a specific genre and present its language learning possibilities in our project. Have you been looking around for games? What titles do you have in mind? If you have troubles finding ideas, here's the list of video game genres you can choose from.
Please let me know what you think in the comments. :)

  1. I think the questions are okay, and as for choosing a genre I might as well settle on mmorpgs and maybe sports games as well, because these are my home turfs.

    Cheers,

  2. I think perhaps we can narrow down the points above under the heading whether we support using games in language acquisition or not. Then we can argue our point by answering the questions above. I would like to do simulation games please. :)

  3. Okay Charmaine! By the way, what kind of simulaton games you have in mind? You mean sport simulations as well, or flying/driving, or some others?

  4. Kind of like Sims, Second-life that kind of thing where real life is simulated. Or is that like role-playing? I am not sure how to classify it :/ I don't mind mission-based games too. Or maybe we should have someone focus on the broad general research while the other two does the game-specific ones. What do you think?

  5. Charmaine: Simulator games are basically games which simulate an aspect of real life. :) For example Sims and Second Life are life simulation games; but there are other sub-categories, such as dating sims, vehicle sims and so on. Mission based games are usually fit into the RPG or action-adventure category.

Since there's an abundance of game genres I think we can each focus on 1-2 of them, while working on the general aspect of language learning. My general idea is that we each share our own views on how games can help foreign language learners, in addition to our own experiences with the games we selected. I think we could make it work like this. :)
I'll focus on music games (e.g. Singstar) and role-playing games (e.g. Final Fantasy), since these are the genres I'm most familiar with. :D
